The statistics of crime do not fully paint a true portrait of the personal injury and loss we feel the closer crime strikes to home. Any victim will tell you that being violated by criminals is perhaps the most life altering event they have experienced, save that of devastating illness. Ultimately, we are all responsible for our own safety and that of our family. The good news is that there are strategies to greatly reduce or illuminate ourselves as targets of criminals. Another positive bit of information is that we do not have to carry a 44 magnum, or enroll in a 20 year long self defense program in order to have a good self defense plan! How many times have you been in a situation where you look over and see a guy acting like a real class a dirt bag, and you’re thinking to yourself this guy can use a real lesson in manners and social graces.
You may even have the moxie and the savvy to be able to put him in his place, and that’s where the problem arises. You see pounding someone’s head in because they’re a jerk or because they offended you is nothing more than social violence brought on by your fragile little ego that just couldn’t stand the torment it received from another human being.
One of the hardest things to do when your ego has been attacked is to walk away. Most people have this deep seated emotional need to defend their ego and in doing so commit horrific acts of violence.
If there’s one thing that I have learned through training in self-defense strategies it’s that how you do one thing is how you do everything, that is to say you get out what you put in. If you are thorough, patient, relaxed and wanting to learn your results will reflect that. However, if you are hurried, impatient, and rushing through your training your results will also reflect that.
True self-defense was never designed to be a weapon called will most certainly could be. Self-defense is designed more for peace of mind utility to walk confidently and proudly in the world comfortable in your own skin.
Social violence stems from not being mature enough to be able to ascertain the difference between a legitimate threat and a stroke to your ego. Any long term effects?
Other than the immediate side effects, there is no study yet that has shown what the long term effects of these pepper sprays will lead to, particularly those with high concentrations of capsaicin. Further research has yet to be effectively performed. What is known, however, is that people who have been sprayed eventually recover completely.
Restrictions
Not all states approve the transport, shipment or even possession of pepper sprays. There are also age restrictions for users. In Washington, for example, only people 18 and above are allowed to carry pepper spray. Younger users are required to have the consent of their guardians. Some states may also restrict how much police pepper spray you can carry. Before using police pepper spray, check local restrictions regarding possession, transport, age requirements and amount.

So, do I follow my own advice? Or was Part 1 “just another article” to whip off in a few minutes?

If you have followed my articles for any length of time, especially the ones I write for martial-arts ezines, then you know that I occasionally “get creative” while writing. (And I do practice, what I write.)
Beyond searching for creative elements to include, I am writing about practical application. When you keep in mind the principle of practicing for the times that you are weakest, then the following scenarios make perfect sense:
Yes, I have written about, and practiced, each and every one of the above. Ah, maybe there really is a method to my ‘weirdness.’
Self Defense — Techniques in the Attack
Once you have a set of scenarios that represent your personal weak spots or vulnerable times, then you have to match technique to hypothetical emergency. Brainstorm how someone might attack you in your scenario: Would your attacker kick low? Reach down towards your neck from above? Grab for your clothing? Imagine the particulars of the attack. Brainstorm for variety, but then select the most likely to occur in a real attack.
Practical Self Defense
Now, return to your favorite techniques. Plan efficient responses to each of the attacks. Try to eliminate any extraneous motions. Think efficient and direct. Plan your follow-up responses. Imagine how you’ll eventually gain control with a wrist lock or arm bar… or plan your escape. Practice repetitively, so that your efficient responses actually do become more automatic. Start slowly; later, pick up speed. Make your responses as smooth and clean as you can.
