Question about being new to self defense?
If i start out at a self defense class with no experience whatsoever will i then be paired up in the same class and age group as myself? or will i come across some 40 year old dude with a black belt?

you go in no exp at all
you will learn the basics
how to punch kick grapple (all depending on what art)
they might get a black belt to show you some moves and practice it out.
or they might have you facing a higher belt (i asked this q before about grappling a ju jitsu blue belt)
basically its to teach you restraint and to get hands on experience of what its going to be like.
you wont get your @ss kicked
well you will but you aint going to be hurt
you are just going to lose the fight and rightfully so if you dont lose it i would be very wary of the school.
also you wont fight another white belt due to yis being the same level you wont learn much and probs injure one another.
just watch out for mcdojos (google for info)
good luck in the arts

Here it goes.
When you start a self-defence course, or ANY martial arts course, you're placed in the beginners class. In the beginner's class, anyone that's also a beginner or recently joined will be learning with you as well. That includes 40 year olds, and kids your age as well. In my Muay Thai class there are guys ranging from 16-50ish. I know i'm being a hypocrite here, but usually the instructor says "find a partner" or if he pairs you up, then he'll look for the best matches available. So if you're 5'8 and there's a 6'5 guy, chances are you won't go with him. And in self-defence courses like Krav Maga or just any random self-defence course there are no belt rankings, the only way you'll get paired with a 40 year old dude with a black belt is if he has a black belt in Taekwondo or something and you're his sparring partner, but he won't be bringing any Taekwondo to self-defence cause he's there exclusively for SD, not TDK.
