Our society has turned into a culture where everyone wants everything right away, and yesterday isn’t soon enough. But we all know good things take time, but do essential skills like real self defense training need the same time to master like martial arts training?

Real martial arts training can’t be rushed, and despite what instructors who work for black belt mills and McDojos say, it takes years to understand a martial art. It can take up to five years for a student to earn their first degree black belt from a legitimate martial arts school. This is a worthy endeavor, but you might want to wait to learn only the essential self defense methods to prepare you for a street fight. Thieves, rapists, and murders aren’t going to wait around until you’re ready to fight back. While martial arts training can take years learning the fundamentals of self defense doesn’t take very long at all while still allowing you to have time to train in whatever style you enjoy.

One of the dirty little secrets of the martial arts industry is that most people who learn martial arts aren’t learning self defense. How can this be true you ask? After all most schools list self defense as one the many benefits to learning whatever styles is being advertised. Well, you’re being lied too or at the very least being misled. Most people who take martial arts like Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are actually just learning a combat sport. Now sure some of then started of as styles meant for close combat and may have been used by soldiers, but many of them have been made safe for competitions and have lost their lethal edge. Now these sports are a lot of fun and are great for combat conditioning, but they don’t replace basic self defense training.

A street fight is a raw primal battle where fighters act more like savage animals than rational and polite men and women. The first thing you have to do is throw sportsmanship out the window and learn how to bite, head butt, and eye gouge an opponent in a fight, and rest assured you don’t have time for any complex techniques. There is even a right way and a wrong way to punch someone, and most people have no idea that the edge of hand does even more damage. When you’re reacting to the stress of battle you won’t be thinking straight so you need to use simple self defense techniques to survive.

Most martial arts styles are to complex to use in an actual fight so even trained martial arts instructors will often go back to the basics in a real fight. Breaking bricks and wooden boards is impressive, but do you think you will be able to concentrate enough to harness that power when you’re ambushed in a parking lot? Do your techniques only work if you’re in a gi or protective clothing, because chances are your attack won’t be wearing a uniform. Also do you have all the knowledge you need right now? You can’t tell an attacker that you haven’t learned how to stop a knife attack or how properly throw a kick yet. For a martial arts style to be effective in real combat it needs to work outside of the martial arts school.

You shouldn’t stop training in your favorite martial arts style, but you do need to start learning self defense techniques that will work in the worst conditions. A fight is all about hurting someone badly enough so they won’t hurt you, and you have to make your move fast. Your black belt might be years away, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn what you need to survive right away. Real self defense training is about making the most out of your basic actions, and maximizing damage, and it should be simple enough for anyone to do.

This is one of my favorite questions. Since you have no experience and are looking to learn how to defend yourself, you have many options. You can choose from a number of martial arts but some are harder than others. One thing you have to take into account is your fitness level and age. If you are older yet very fit, most martial arts will accept you well. However, if your young and cant even touch your toes you should watch out. Martial arts is very demanding and you have to remember the details to minimize your chances of getting hurt.

So since you want to know what style of self defense would be best for you, I have come up with a variety of options. The first one is my opinion on one of the easiest martial arts to jump into. After that I have listed some alternate options that might help you if you decide not to go down self-defense lane.

1.) Karate

Karate is one of my favorite styles of self defense. If you would ask me which martial art is the easiest I would have to say this one. Now I am not saying this martial art is weak by any means but it would have to be one of the easiest ones.

2.) Pepper Spray Anyone?

If you feel you don’t have the experience nor the will power to go through with martial arts there are a couple of options for you. You can simply carry pepper spray or a stun gun, that will do the trick. I know so many people that do just that and they tell me they automatically feel ten times safer.

3.) Who Likes Running?

This may sound really stupid but if you can run faster than your assailant, you have the upper hand. Most crooks and burglars are weak and out of shape. If you are mugged or attacked by someone that you know you cant beat, run. If it means you being a little safer who cares whether you ran away or not.

“He who runs and gets away lives to fight another day.”

-Unknown

Matthew Batcho is an entrepreneur that has been involved with start-up business for over 10 years. He currently owns a landscaping business and runs a small self defense business online. He enjoys writing, painting, and discovering new ways to build business.
http://www.peopleprotection.com

Best self defense round?

I hear again and again the .357 mag or sig, 125 grain semi jacketed hallow point is the best self-defense round. I'm a little new to guns, but how come something bigger (in JHP) wouldn't be more effective, like a .44 mag, .454, or a .500 mag? Wouldn't a bigger the bullet expand further with more impact, thus causing more internal damage and a bigger exit wound? I guess I'm asking why a bigger gun isn't more effective.
Also, in self defense, would a .45 acp risk shooting thru a person and into an innocent person with hallow points (or FMJ), or will they stay in the bad guy? Thanks.

Many self defense instructors teach a sideward strike to the point of the jaw as a means to cause an instant knockout. Although that is a very useful concept, especially when used as a preemptive strike (striking first when a fight is unavoidable,) that barely scratches the surface of the almost unlimited ways to control or neutralize an aggressor when one has the opportunity to strike or grab the chin of an attacker:

1. The classic hooking strike-The old reliable technique of striking the last three inches on either side of the jaw will cause the skull to pivot suddenly on the vertebra of the neck and violently shake the brain in the skull. This sudden and violent shaking of the head will cause the brain to bounce around, often knocking an aggressor out cold or at least causing a flash knockout, in which the victim is “out on his feet” and his mind goes blank for a few seconds before he comes to his senses after he is already lying on the ground. Needless to say, a flash knockout in and of itself is not a fight-ender, but the opportunity that it gives you to follow-up with other blows will almost ensure your surviving a fight.

2. The direct strike-Popularized by Rex Applegate and the other WW II pioneers of military close combat, moving directly in and striking the bottom of the jaw to push it upwards and backwards at about a 45 degree angle will often cause a knockout. Even if it doesn’t, it will cause your opponent to loose his balance and stumble or fall backwards, usually exposing his groin to kicks and his windpipe to further attacks.

3. Horizontally twisting the head-Grasping and twisting the head in the same direction as the classic hooking strike to the jaw won’t result in a knockout because it isn’t explosive enough to cause trauma to the brain, but, if you grab the back of the hand with one hand and the point of the jaw with the other, you will be able to twist the neck and control the head. Just as any gymnast would tell you, the body follows the head and therefore this movement can be used to turn an aggressor and move him (especially helpful to make a hole in a circle of multiple opponents and start attacking the others from behind or the side,) throw a person into a wall to better control him or even take someone to the ground.

4. Tilting the head backwards-Just as when horizontally twisting, instead of striking the jaw, pushing the bottom of the jaw upwards and backwards won’t result in a knockout, but it will cause an aggressor to bend his spine backwards, which will destroy his balance and expose his windpipe to follow-up blows. Even when incorporated into a strike, grabbing the chin will automatically position your extended fingers under the ridge of bone covered by the eyebrows and allow you to not only tilt the head, but cause pain by applying pressure to the eyes as well. This movement is a good follow-up for a direct palm heel to the chin that didn’t result in a knockout and can be used to pin an opponent by pushing him against a wall or, better yet, an object that comes up to the height of his lower back. By pushing him against such an object, like the hood of a car or even just pulling with your free hand on his back just above the level of his belt his balance will be gone and he can be controlled or finished off easily.

Christopher “Bob” Roberts is an ex-soldier who relocated to Europe and now earns his living as a tactics and close-combat instructor for military, police and private security companies.

On one hand, you want to be able to defend yourself from individuals who have evil designs on your person and property. After all, it is your life and limb that is stake here and you want to hold on to them for as long as you possibly can.

On the other hand, you want to make your conscience clear and your freedom near by not accidentally killing your attacker. How do you accomplish such a delicate balancing act? Well, you apply these methods, of course!

Use Non-Lethal Weapons

Non-lethal weapons are designed to temporarily incapacitate their subjects instead of killing them. When your attacker is writhing in pain, you can take advantage of the window of opportunity for a hasty escape.

There are many commercially available non-lethal weapons in the market that will not break the bank but can break the spirit, or at least the body, of your attacker. These include pepper and mace sprays, electroshock devices like stun guns and stun batons as well as Tasers, and personal alarms. You will either drive your attackers away or immobilize them for a few precious minutes sufficient to make your quick getaway.

Focus on Escaping

Sure, you may want to exact sweet revenge on your attacker by physically assaulting and verbally castigating him/her. However, this is exactly the kind of vindictive reaction that can prolong your unfortunate contact with your attacker and thereby increasing the chances for direct confrontation.

And when it does come to direct confrontation, you are exposed to greater risks because your attacker can lash out in anger even when he/she is temporarily blinded by the pepper spray. And why would you want that to happen?

So, at the first chance of escape, take it. Just focus on getting yourself out of the dangerous situation with your life and limbs where they ought to be – attached to your body.

Go for the Vulnerable Albeit Not Life-threatening Areas

There are instances, admittedly, that direct confrontation cannot be avoided. In such cases, the next best thing to do is to attack the aggressors’ vulnerable areas in order to temporarily weaken his defense or disarm him of his deadly weapons. Of course, these vulnerable areas should be carefully chosen so that you don’t accidentally kill him.

First, you can aim for the genital area especially if your attacker is of the male gender. You should deliver a strong kick but be sure that you have the element of surprise on your side since most male attackers are prepared for such an attack. Or you can kick him in the knees, groin and throat since these are also vulnerable areas. And if when you are in high heels, use the pointed spikes to your advantage.

Second, you can make him unconscious by hitting him to his head with a blunt object. As much as possible, avoid using pointed objects like knives unless it’s the only available and reachable weapon in sight.

Third, if you hands are free but your legs are pinned down, gouge him in the eyes with your thumbs. This ought to temporarily blind him, momentarily relax his hold on you and then you can quickly flee.

And when you have escaped, run like the hounds of hell are after you, scream like a banshee to attract attention and just live to tell the tale.

If you appreciate a strong, healthy self confidence that carries you through overwhelming times and drives you to achieving your most far reaching goals, martial arts is for you.

A person’s self-confidence is like a muscle, it needs to be exercised in order to grow and develop. In the 20 plus years that I’ve been teaching Martial Arts in our community we have developed a 5 step approach to building self-confidence. These 5 steps can be learned by anyone – with the right guidance:

1.	Correct Body Posture. The importance of the correct body posture is paramount. We all send hidden, sub-conscious messages with our body language and the way we carry ourselves. Carry yourself with pride, confidence and security. Carry yourself like a successful person and your confidence will show.

2.	Proper Eye Contact. Making proper eye contact when speaking to others has a huge effect on the conversation. Have you ever been talking to somebody and instantly felt connected? Like you’ve known this person forever? Chances are, they understand the importance of body language, and proper eye-contact.

3.	Goal Setting. Goal setting is talked about by everybody, and most people understand the importance of this process. Then why do most people miss their mark? Because they don’t have the discipline and confidence to see the goal through. Our process teaches you the right way to set goals and actually achieve them!

4.	Communication. Inspiring those around you is critical to getting what you want. Whether they are your children, co-workers, employees or boss, good leaders are inspirational. We teach this inspirational formula.

5.	Mentors. All of the skills above, a healthy body and mind combined with a good mentor or two will make all the difference in the world for your happiness and success.

A modern definition of self-defense is in order. One way of defining self-defense is to explain what it is not. Personal self-defense is not warfare; it is not vengeance; it is not an art; it is not a sporting event; it is not a movie …

I hope you’ve been enjoying my posts lately. I thought I might do something different today and rustle up a few bits of info from around the WWW. These are some of the news items and blog posts that have been popular over the last few weeks. Leave me your thoughts.

Lately, school attacks have been in the news. Unfortunately, they seem to be growing more and more common. How do you teach your children to be safe in the case of such attacks?

Most schools, particularly those at the kindergarten through twelfth grade level, have a zero tolerance policy with regards to weapons of any kind. This means no guns, no knives, and no pepper spray. Even if you give your child a small canister of pepper spray simply for self defense reasons, both you and your child can get in serious trouble if this is discovered.

Since weapons, even nonlethal ones that are designed for self defense, are banned on school property, you’ll need to consider other ways to prepare your children for such attacks. The truth is, they are much more likely to come up against more routine violence, such as bullying, than against a mass school shooting like those that have been on the news. Though the level of violence can vary greatly depending on the age of the kids and the particular school, you can bet that your children will have to face a violent or threatening situation at some point during their educational career.

Your advice should depend on your child’s age. Younger children should simply be told to tell an adult if another child is threatening them or harassing them, while older children may be unwilling to do so and want to handle the situation themselves. Of course, in all cases if an adult who is not a student at the school is seen as a possible threat, the school should be alerted immediately.

You should also teach your children to pay attention if their friends seem depressed or even suicidal. Although many adults don’t believe it, young children, especially those entering the teenage years, can be depressed. Depression is not limited only to adults and older teens. If your child sees his or her friends or anyone else at school with a gun, knife, or other weapon, a teacher or other school authority should be told immediately. This can stop school violence before it even starts.

Because children are unarmed when in school, the best plan if they think that someone wants to hurt them is to go away from that person and tell an adult. It is a personal decision what you choose to tell your kids about bullies, whether they should try to fight back, or immediately tell an adult, or some other response. Still, they should at least know how to protect themselves if someone tries to pick on them. Particularly if your child has a problem with bullies, self defense classes can give them the confidence to deal with these issues.

Schools today can be frightening, depending on the particular environment and your child. Give your child the skills they need to be successful in such an environment by boosting their self confidence and helping them to learn what to do in situations such as these. All students deserve to go to school in an environment where they are safe from harm.
