In Part 1 of this article, we discussed focusing on scenario training for practical self defense. Instead of the typical scenario, you should focus on your weaknesses — when you are at your most vulnerable.

Does this make sense?

Practical Self-Defense Advice to Follow

So, do I follow my own advice? Or was Part 1 “just another article” to whip off in a few minutes?

Well …

If you have followed my articles for any length of time, especially the ones I write for martial-arts ezines, then you know that I occasionally “get creative” while writing. (And I do practice, what I write.)

Beyond searching for creative elements to include, I am writing about practical application. When you keep in mind the principle of practicing for the times that you are weakest, then the following scenarios make perfect sense:

  • while in a restaurant booth, where you can’t maneuver
  • from a bathroom stall or standing at a urinal
  • through a rolled-down window of a car
  • while lying in bed
  • in the pitch-dark hallway that leads to your bedroom
  • while your hands are holding an appetizer plate and a drink at a party
  • when you are exhausted after a workout in the park

Yes, I have written about, and practiced, each and every one of the above. Ah, maybe there really is a method to my ‘weirdness.’

Self Defense — Techniques in the Attack

Once you have a set of scenarios that represent your personal weak spots or vulnerable times, then you have to match technique to hypothetical emergency. Brainstorm how someone might attack you in your scenario: Would your attacker kick low? Reach down towards your neck from above? Grab for your clothing? Imagine the particulars of the attack. Brainstorm for variety, but then select the most likely to occur in a real attack.

Practical Self Defense

Now, return to your favorite techniques. Plan efficient responses to each of the attacks. Try to eliminate any extraneous motions. Think efficient and direct. Plan your follow-up responses. Imagine how you’ll eventually gain control with a wrist lock or arm bar… or plan your escape. Practice repetitively, so that your efficient responses actually do become more automatic. Start slowly; later, pick up speed. Make your responses as smooth and clean as you can.

A personal alarm is a self defense device, that when activated, emits a extremely loud, high pitched, ear piercing alert.

Are all personal alarms the same?

How To Street Fight: Using Fight Techniques For Street Self Defense That Work

There’s a lot of differing opinions about the best street self defense techniques to use in the case of a real attack. If you’ve ever had the bad luck of being involved in a real street fight though, then you already know the best fight techniques to use— the ones that work!!! Anyone who can relate knows that when you’re in that situation, you need fight techniques that: 1.)Don’t require hours of practice, 2.)Are easy to remember under pressure, and 3.)It certainly can’t hurt if their effects on your attacker are painful and downright nasty. You need to be able to end the fight fast—– plain and simple.

Street Self Defense Principles

When you need to know how to street fight effectively, there are principles to follow that will give you an edge over your attacker or opponent. The first principle that you want to remember when using any fight technique in a street self defense situation is the First Strike Principle. The First Strike Principle is just as it sounds. In knowing how to street fight, when your life is at stake, you have to be the one to strike first, strike fast, and don’t let up.

The fact is, that in street self defense, the longer the fight lasts—- the greater your chances of serious injury or even death. You need to end the fight as quickly as possible. Striking first is the best method of making this happen because it allows you to stop your attacker while keeping him from “getting the drop” on you. No time is wasted and no unnecessary risks are taken.

The element of surprise is critical in knowing how to street fight effectively. Striking first gives you the upper hand because it allows you to attack suddenly and unexpectedly. As a result, you demolish his defenses and ultimately take him out of the fight.

Defense Is Not A Good Offense In A Street Fight

In any kind of self defense situation the best self defence is to strike first. A defensive fighter is one who allows the attacker to gain control in a fight. This defensive mindset can get you killed in street combat. Simply put, allowing your attacker to deliver the first strike is absolute suicide. It is like allowing a gunslinger to draw his pistol first. Don’t forget if you allow him to strike first, he might injure or
1000
possibly kill you.

The first strike principle requires you to have an offensive mentality where you need to act rather than react. You must be aggressive and take control of the situation.

Some martial art instructors even teach their students to wait for their opponent to make the first move. This can be a BIG MISTAKE! This reactive type of approach will get you killed.

The Lunge Technique
One of the best self defence principles and fight techniques is the Lunge Technique. The basic principle here is that you want to keep your weight on your front foot, not your back foot. Most people keep their weight on their back foot. They are taught to do this. Most martial artists put their weight on the back foot so they can kick with the front foot, and it’s human nature to back away from someone trying to punch or attack us. Keeping your weight on your back foot allows you to back up easily. Believe it or not, in a street fight situation, you want to step into an attacker, not back away. When you keep your weight on your front foot(and I know this is going to feel a little weird), but take a step with your front foot while keeping most of your weight on it, it allows you to practically leap into an attackers face, and that is not what he’s expecting from you. He wants to come at you in a fury of punches and kicks and he wants to keep you backing up and on the defensive. By keeping your weight on the front foot and stepping in with it, allows you to “be in his face” which is completely unexpected, and if you know the vital targets to hit, you’re going to have an extreme advantage over him.

So, what are these vital targets that you need to hit?? Striking first is great and everything but how is that going to help you if you don’t know WHERE to strike? These principles are important, but really, they do you no good without practical fight techniques you can use immediately. Stop using ineffective techniques that are only going to get you killed. self defense – YouTube – Self-defense Unbreakable Umbrella from Real-Self-Defense.com

Many college campuses are beefing up security these days after all of the bad and sad stories we have heard in recent years about crime, and even the occasional kid who snaps and starts harming others. Plus there is always the ongoing concern of people with daughters, that their little princess will get attacked by someone when she is just jogging or taking a walk. It is sad, but we live in a time when you really have to protect yourself and the ones that you love. Not only do the students need some sort of protection, but the teachers do as well.

Now, although many people may not want to carry firearms, there are many great alternatives for self defense and personal protection. One such item that is great to have for self defense, which is extremely effective and powerful, is a stun gun. It is usually about the size of a cell phone or a deck of playing cards, and is battery operated, and can deliver anywhere from a few hundred thousand volts up to a million or even a bit more, right into the body of the thug who tries to bother your little princess, or her professor. By the way, stun guns are for self defense ONLY and should never be handled or carried by minors.

So, when your daughter is off to college, and she has a nice strong stun gun, quietly in her purse, book bag, or gym bag, she should be okay. If anyone tries to take her wallet or her dignity away, she can simply pull out her little friend, flip the switch, touch the two prongs to the creep’s torso for a few seconds, and down he’ll go, like a sack of potatoes!

He will be mentally confused for a few minutes, he won’t be able to think or speak, maybe he’ll even pee his pants, which would be a nice turning-of-the-tables, being that the girl he was going to rob or harass brought him to the ground. She can then get away and get to safety, and perhaps even call the cops, to go deal with the guy laying there slobbering and crying on the corner of Maple and Fifth!

Any woman from 21 to 81, and even many men also, should be carrying stun guns to defend themselves from these thugs and creeps that are out there. Wouldn’t YOU love to hear a story on your local news, for once, about a punk who tried to steal an old lady’s pocketbook, and instead she stun gunned the living daylights out of the guy? Then as he lays there in a state of confusion, she pulls out the cell phone, calls the cops, and maybe they had a cruiser nearby who can be at the scene in minutes. Then the end of the story might be that when the police arrived, she grabs the punk by his ear, and leads him to stand up in embarrassment and humiliation in front of the cops, and in front of the crowd that has gathered! That would be a great story to see on the news, wouldn’t it!?
